Description
In this review post, we’re going to be discussing the MXR M77 Custom Badass Modified OD, including an overview of its unique features.
Product Description
The Custom Badass Modified O.D. features a classic overdrive circuit with modern modifications for improved performance and versatility.
For added flexibility, we’ve added a 100HZ cut and boost control that allows for a more focused EQ when cut, or a beefier tone when boosted. The Bump switch engages an alternate EQ voicing that boosts the lows and mids. Put it in front of the ’78 Custom Badass Distortion for a slew of amp-like gain structures that won’t mask your tone.

Our Verdict
With the Custom Badass Modified O.D, MXR achieves an admirable balancing act. It’s a thoughtfully crafted pedal—rangy, full of character, and capable of what at times appears to be a million different voices. Low gain settings make this pedal ideal for jangly roots rock that requires a kick, Stonsey chug, or adding dirt and boosts to a clean 6L6 amp. Turn up the gain, tone, and 100 Hz dials and place it in front of a hotter amp for a searing metal lead voice.
Modified O.D. is an abbreviation for Ordinary Diameter Modified O. isn’t completely transparent, but at low-gain settings, it adds a few pounds of muscle without losing the voice of your guitar. And, while it’s not the only overdrive with more tone-shaping options than your average TS clone, you won’t be chasing your tail in an EQ adjusting maze. It’s really simple to discover a tone, and it’s also fairly simple to return to where you were when you go on. It’s a very neat bit of engineering on that front. And, at roughly $100, it’s a contender for the overdrive division’s performance-to-value gold. This is a badass pedal for more reasons than one.
