Our Verdict

When it comes to using it as an audio output for my headphones, the built-in DAC/amp works flawlessly and is far superior to the output on my laptop. I can’t say much about it because I don’t have much to compare it to, but it has a wide range of listening volumes (I usually have it set at 11 or 12 o’clock with my AKG K612 Pros, with all volumes in Windows set to max) and the direct monitoring feature is great for letting me know if I’m talking a little too loud. I don’t like how it muffles the output signal just a little bit, but that’s just nitpicking.

The unit’s build quality is excellent. Looking from the front, the slightly glossy front facade isn’t distracted by reflections because the sheen isn’t overdone, and each knob feels wonderful and buttery smooth to move. Though the modest size of the knobs isn’t particularly pleasing to me, it’s not exactly a problem, is it?

The unit sits just a little higher than the surface on some little rubber feet that do a decent job of preventing the surface from getting scratches from the unit’s shell. Speaking of which, the metal case has a good quality feel to it and is free of any rough edges. My only gripe about the unit is that the phantom power switch is on the back (I prefer having all of the dials and switches on the front for the convenience of access), but because the average person won’t be tinkering with that switch very much if at all, it isn’t a major deal.

Overall, I think the unit is really good, especially considering the price you can purchase it for! The build quality is excellent, and the included features are excellent as well.
